The threat of dog attacks on delivery drivers

On Behalf of | Jun 29, 2025 | Personal Injury |

Every day, delivery workers and mail carriers enter unfamiliar yards and walkways to bring packages and mail to our doors. Unfortunately, dog bite incidents are not uncommon. These attacks can cause serious injuries, emotional trauma and lost wages.

Delivery drivers are usually just doing their jobs, trying to meet deadlines. But when a loose or aggressive dog is waiting on the other side of a gate or roaming freely in a yard, one wrong move can lead to an unexpected attack. If you have been bitten in this type of situation, it is important to know that you have rights and you may be eligible for compensation beyond what your employer provides.

Not just a workplace injury

While many dog bite claims can go through workers’ compensation, that is not always enough. In some cases, injured delivery drivers can also file a third-party claim against the dog’s owner. It may be applicable when:

  • The dog had a known history of aggression.
  • The owner failed to contain the dog properly (for example, an open gate or no leash)
  • The dog was roaming in violation of leash laws.
  • The owner refused to warn the delivery person about the dog.

Unlike standard workers’ comp, a third-party claim can cover pain and suffering, emotional distress and long-term disability.

If you are a homeowner, it is equally crucial to know your liability. Do not assume that because a dog has no history of aggression or biting, you are off the hook. In many states, dog owners are strictly liable, especially if they knew or should have known the dog posed a risk.

Dog bites involving delivery drivers are real legal matters, not minor workplace accidents. If you have been injured on the job, it is wise to seek the guidance of a legal professional to protect your rights and make sure you receive the compensation you are entitled to.
