What to remember when exchanging information after a car accident

When you are involved in an accident, exchanging information with the other driver is one of the steps you are required to take. Failing to stop at an accident scene and providing your information constitutes a hit-and-run accident, which is an offense.

Here are two things to keep in mind when exchanging information:

Get the needed details

You and the other driver should exchange names, addresses, phone numbers, vehicle details, driver’s license numbers and insurance information.

Obtain the other driver’s full name to identify who was operating the vehicle at the time of the accident. You can request to check their driver’s license to verify their name and license number. If they are not the vehicle’s owner, get the name of the owner and their address and phone number since they will need to be contacted during the insurance claim process. You’ll also want to note down the license plate of the other vehicle.

The insurance details you need from the other driver are the name of their insurance company and policy so your insurer can file a claim with the respective company. Request the driver to provide you with their proof of insurance card to correctly record their insurance details.

Do not discuss the accident

It can be tempting to discuss the accident with the other driver when exchanging information. But this can be unwise because you may unknowingly admit fault. For example, saying “I’m sorry” or any other statement that implies you are apologizing might be viewed as an admission of fault.

Exchanging information after an accident is a necessary step. It’s also vital to get more information about your case to understand your options.
