For many people, driving on a rural road feels safer. There is probably a lot less traffic, so they do not have to deal with as many other drivers. There are fewer traffic control devices and intersections. They have long stretches of straight pavement where the drive feels relaxing and even enjoyable.
However, rural roads are not safer. When you look at the fatal accident rate, you find that it is higher on these roads than it is on the city streets which often feel so chaotic and confusing. The number of fatalities on rural roads is disproportionately high. Why does this happen?
It takes longer to get medical care
One of the biggest factors is just that these roads tend to be farther away from the closest hospital. So it can take much longer to get medical care. A person with the same injuries in the city may survive because they could get care in just a few minutes.
The speed limits are higher
Additionally, higher speeds increase the odds of traffic fatalities, so the higher speed limits on remote roads are part of the issue. If two accidents are highly similar, but one takes place at 30 miles an hour and the other takes place at 60 miles an hour, the second is much more likely to lead to fatal injuries.
What are your options?
It is important to be aware of these risks so that you can drive safely. But you can’t always avoid accidents, which may be caused by other drivers. If you get injured, then you need to look into your options to seek financial compensation.
