Stray bullet strikes bystander after fight in uptown Charlotte

A tragic incident can strike at any moment. This can cause many unsuspecting individuals to suffer grat harm. This can leave them feeling overwhelmed and confused, unsure about what they can do. In some cases legal courses may be available.

A fight broke out in uptown Charlotte near Trade and College streets recently. The suspects began shooting, and a stray bullet struck an innocent man standing nearby. Approximately an hour earlier, a three-alarm fire was reported at a nearby uptown restaurant in a high-rise building. Due to that fire, the occupants of the high-rise had been evacuated, and the streets were very crowded with people.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have one suspect in custody and are searching for additional witnesses to help identify other suspects. Some parties are being held for interview. Law enforcement officials stated that the man is in grave condition and suffered serious injuries.

When a person suffers harm due to the reckless actions of another, he or she may have grounds for a personal injury litigation. In the state of North Carolina, the statute of limitations for filing such a case is three years from the date of injury. Therefore, the injured man in this instance would have three years from the date he was struck by the bullet to file a lawsuit for damages.

Another rule to be aware of that is specific to North Carolina injury cases is that punitive damages cannot exceed three times the amount of actual damages. While punitive damages are rarely awarded in personal injury cases, it is still important to be aware of this fact.

Any person who has been injured through no fault of their own should contact an attorney as soon as possible to discuss what kinds of claims may be filed. This will ensure they are aware of their rights and take timely action in their matter.
