Road debris: A major danger

On Behalf of | Jun 27, 2018 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Many things can increase the likelihood of motor vehicle accidents. This includes objects ending up on the roads that shouldn’t be there, such as road debris.

A common cause of road debris are improperly secured loads. A lot of different things could lead to a car or truck having an unsecured load. This could include a driver failing to take steps like loading objects onto the car or truck in a proper order, adequately tying down a load and putting a tarp or netting over a load.

It is illegal to drive with an unsecured load here in North Carolina. Violations of this law can yield a fine of up to $2,000 and other penalties.

It appears though that, despite this law, unsecured loads remain a big and fairly regularly present danger in the state. Recent North Carolina Department of Transportation statistics point to the state having seen a lot of road-debris-related accidents in recent years. Over the past four years, over 3,500 such crashes have occurred in the state. They led to five fatalities and over 900 injuries.

So, it sadly is not that uncommon for drivers to encounter road debris hazards out on North Carolina’s roads. Now, traffic accidents involving road debris can raise complicated issues related to who was responsible for the road debris and who victims can take legal action against. Individuals harmed in such crashes here in North Carolina may want to obtain skilled help and guidance when it comes to these legal issues and other related matters.
